Report Finds Los Angeles Struggles to Keep Top Talent

Los Angeles is ranked as one of the top cities to produce highly skilled tech workers, but the high cost of living and lack of job opportunities are forcing those workers to other cities, said a report released today by CBRE Group Inc.

Los Angeles, which was placed behind New York and Washington D.C. as the city with the largest number of college-educated workers, produced 12,679 graduates in 2014, an 80 percent increase from 2010.

A lack of jobs, though, has placed Los Angeles among top three “brain drain” markets.

“Tech companies need to give L.A. a closer look because of the immense talent that does exist here,” said Executive Vice President Andrew Ratner, who runs CBRE’s office in Southern California, in a statement. “L.A. has so much going for it. So many tech companies are opening offices in L.A. and are planning to expand here.”

The report measured how big cities are able to attract tech talent. Researchers looked at several criteria, including tech supply, industry outlook for job growth, market for offices, and apartment rent cost growth.

Jason Nazar, chief executive of Santa Monica startup Comparably, disagreed with the report’s findings.

“Many tech companies are setting their offices in L.A.,” he said. “That creates demand for tech workers. It is difficult to find top talent because there is so much competition for it.”
