The American Civil Liberties Union on Monday filed a federal discrimination lawsuit against Walt Disney Co., alleging that a female Muslim employee was harassed and removed from her job after a dispute over her head scarf.

Imane Boudlal, a 28-year-old former hostess at Disneyland’s Storytellers Café in Anaheim, contends that she was not allowed to wear her “hijab” at work two years ago unless she took a so-called “backstage” position. She also said she was called demeaning names by co-workers, and no action was taken by the Burbank company when she complained.

A Disney spokesperson told the New York Times that its theme parks have a long history of accommodating religious requests from cast members of all faiths.

The lawsuit was filed in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles.
