Layoff Notices Sent as Final Bars Play at WeHo House of Blues

The legendary House of Blues on Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood will close on Aug. 7, according to a notice filed with the state Employment Development Department.

Beverly Hills concert promoter Live Nation Entertainment Inc., owner of House of Blues Los Angeles Restaurant Corp., said 197 employees – bartenders, bussers, servers, directors, cooks, sales people, stage hands, managers and security – would be laid off starting July 31.

The notice said certain employees may be offered an opportunity to transfer to other Live Nation Entertainment operations, but it did not say which, if any, may be offered the option.

“We’ve had a terrific run with our Sunset location and we’re actively searching for a new venue as our flagship,” said a Live Nation spokesman. “We’re actively working with our employee base to assure them of employment.”

News broke last summer that the site leased by House of Blues at 8430 Sunset Blvd. would be developed as a mixed-use condo, hotel and entertainment facility. At the time, Live Nation said the West Hollywood location would operate for at least two more years.

Live Nation operates 12 House of Blues music and restaurant venues around the country, including the West Hollywood site and a House of Blues in Disneyland in Anaheim. The live music halls typically can accommodate 1,000 to 2,000 guests, according to the company.
