Despite the terminal renovations and flight expansions, Bloomberg reported Tuesday that it would be unlikely that LAX will ever be a true airline “fortress hub” like Atlanta, Dallas-Fort Worth, or Newark, N.J., in which a single airline can command as much as 75 percent of the traffic.
One reality working against airlines wanting to rule LAX is that the airport splits traffic with four other airports within 55 miles, and all with multiple airlines offering service. Another is the city’s popularity as a tourist and business destination.
Even with those factors, American Airlines and Delta Air Lines are competing to be the biggest airline at LAX. American announced it would build two additional gates at LAX to allow 20 new daily flights, bringing its total to 220 flights and 70 destinations.
Delta, meanwhile, celebrated the completion last summer of a $229 million renovation of LAX’s Terminal 5, which includes a private entrance for celebrities and VIP travelers. Delta also doubled its nonstop destinations from Los Angeles to nearly 60 since 2012.
