L.A. Ranked Eighth-Most Expensive City for Travelers

Los Angeles is now ranked the eighth most expensive city in the world for tourists and foreign businesspeople, according to the Worldwide Cost of Living survey, administered by The Economist’s Economist Intelligence Unit. It’s a big jump from its 2015 ranking of 27th.

The results, reported by the Los Angeles Times on Thursday, pointed to the rising U.S. dollar pushing Los Angeles ahead of such famously pricey metropolises as Tokyo and Shanghai. The new ranking makes it only slightly cheaper than New York, which ranked seventh on the list of 133 cities.

Simon Baptist, chief economist at the Economist Intelligence Unit, aid the jump could cut into the number of tourists coming to Southern California and curb their appetite for purchases.

The Worldwide Cost of Living is a twice-annual survey designed to help human resources and finance managers calculate cost-of-living allowances for employees and build compensation packages for expatriates and business travelers.

The survey compares more than 400 individual prices across 160 products and services, including food, drink, clothing, household supplies and personal care items, home rents, transport, utility bills, private schools, domestic help and recreational costs.

Applying this criteria, Singapore remains the world’s most expensive place for visitors and expats, followed by Zurich, Hong Kong, Geneva, Paris and London. The three least expensive cities were Lusaka, Zambia; Bangalore, India; and Mumbai, India.
