Mayor Eric Garcetti and Los Angeles 2024, the nonprofit agency leading L.A.’s bid for the 2024 Summer Olympics and Paralympic Games, announced Monday that local universities are playing a major role in the proposal.
UCLA is the planned location of the Olympic Village, where thousands of athletes, coaches and staff would be housed during the games. USC, meanwhile, would host the global press at a media village on its campus.
Los Angeles is competing against Rome, Paris and Budapest, Hungary to host the games.
UCLA was chosen as the Olympic Village site in favor of Piggyback Yard, a 125-acre stretch of Union Pacific railroad tracks between the Los Angeles River and L.A. County-USC Medical Center. The plan to convert the former railway yard, originally proposed in August 2015, was shelved due to the high costs involved with cleaning up and redeveloping the land, which could have reached $2 billion.
UCLA and USC both housed athletes during the 1984 Summer Games.
