Los Angeles may be given the chance to pick up where Boston left off.

After Los Angeles officials expressed interest in competing to host the 2024 summer Olympics, members of the U.S. Olympic Committee said after a meeting Wednesday that they were impressed with all that Los Angeles had to offer – especially the level of public and political support for staging the Games – and were optimistic of giving the city’s bid their official backing before the end of this month.

A poll commissioned by the USOC showed 81 percent of the Los Angeles public supports an Olympic bid, double the level of support in Boston, which the USOC initially selected to vie for the games before the bid disintegrated due to low public support.

City officials said earlier this week the Summer 2024 Olympics would come with a $4.1 billion price tag and guaranteed to cover any cost overruns – something Boston officials were not willing to do.

“The L.A. Olympics would inspire the world and are right for our city,” said Mayor Eric Garcetti in a statement Wednesday afternoon.

Should the USOC put Los Angeles forward, the city will have to compete with Rome, Paris, Budapest and Hamburg for the 2024 games.
