Kaiser Permanente on Thursday said it plans to establish a medical school in Southern California, the Los Angeles Times reports. The nonprofit health system has not selected a site for the Kaiser Permanente School of Medicine, but expects classes will begin in 2019.
In an interview with the publication, Kaiser Chief Executive Bernard Tyson said he explored the possibility of partnering with existing universities, but decided to open Kaiser’s own medical school instead.
“We have the opportunity to help train future physicians on 21st century medicine and be on the cutting edge of all the changes we are experiencing,” Tyson told the Times.
