Instacart, the retail delivery service which has been valued at $2 billion, announced that it has expanded into the South Bay. Customers who use the service will be able to order from Whole Foods Market, Costco and Ralphs. They can receive their groceries in as little as one hour via a courier service.
“We received an influx of requests for service in the South Bay, so we’re excited to bring on-demand delivery to these residents,” said Sophie Kleinert, an Instacart spokeswoman, in an email.
The latest announcement comes as a multitude of tech giants and start-ups have moved into the food-delivery sector. According to CB Insights, one-third of companies in that industry received their first round of funding in just the last year, following the success of large delivery companies including Blue Apron, Munchery, DoorDash and Postmates.
Last month, Amazon and Google both began offering delivery services in the Los Angeles area, while on Thursday, UberEATS launched its own stand-alone meal delivery app.
Asked what Instacart would do differently, Kleinert said that Instacart’s service and quality would set it apart in the on-demand economy.
The company is now in 18 metropolitan areas in the United States.
