Excellent Adventure in ‘Quantum’ Filmmaking

A video starring Stephen Hawking and Paul Rudd engaged in a game of Quantum Chess premiered Tuesday night in Caltech’s Beckman Auditorium as part of “One Entangled Evening,” a celebration of past and present quantum science. The event tribute to the legacy of the late Caltech physicist Richard Feynman, who received the Nobel Prize in physics 50 years ago.

The Daily News reported Thursday that the 11-minute film was devised by Caltech quantum researcher Spyridon Michalakis, who turned to Ed Solomon, the writer of “Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure” for a creative assist, as well as that film’s star, Alex Winter, who agreed to shoot the short. Winter tapped his “excellent” “Bill and Ted” co-star Keanu Reeves to narrate.

Michalakis worked out the fine points of the story with USC Graduate Student Chris Cantwell. He is the developer of the Quantum Chess game played in the video, which will soon be promoted on Kickstarter. The game imagines each piece as a quantum particle, following the same rules of probability and uncertainty. A piece might exist in more than one state, making the moves much more unpredictable.
