Care: The new cancer center at Emanate Health Queen of the Valley Hospital.

Emanate Health, the largest health care system in the San Gabriel Valley, has opened a 60,000-square-foot cancer center at its flagship Queen of the Valley Hospital in West Covina.

The $74 million cancer center, which debuted on Sept. 18, is the first of two buildings comprising a new medical pavilion at Queen of the Valley Hospital. The other building, currently under construction, will house an emergency department and intensive care unit.

The cancer center is intended to improve access to complete cancer care, including infusion therapy, radiation oncology, radiation treatment, surgery and education – all in one location.

Construction took two years to complete, during which time the cost rose from $63 million to $74 million.

“After many years, we now have an advanced cancer center right in the neighborhood,” Roger Sharma, Emanate Health’s chief executive, said in the announcement of the center’s opening. “Building the cancer center is one of the most important achievements we have accomplished, bringing a world-class facility with advanced treatment protocols and the highest-quality care all in one location for San Gabriel Valley residents.”

The chief architect for the two-story building was New York City-based CannonDesign. San Diego-based health care facilities developer PMB was the project manager, Irvine-based Snyder Langston the main construction contractor.

The first floor of the cancer center includes an operating room suite consisting of four operating rooms, seven pre-op bays, six post-op bays and two private post-op rooms. It also contains a radiation oncology suite with diagnostic equipment that includes a linear accelerator vault and CT scanner and a high-dose radiation treatment area. w

The second floor has 25 general examination rooms, ultrasound and pulmonary specialty exam areas as well as procedure and cardiac stress- exam suites. There are also 20 infusion therapy bays, as well as two private rooms with guest seating for family members and caregivers.

The remainder of the second level’s 30,000 square feet contains a dozen exam rooms, a pharmacy compounding area and an onsite laboratory for diagnostic testing.

Emanate Health has named Shanmuga Subbiah as medical director of the cancer center. Subbiah was most recently the assistant professor of medicine in the hematology/oncology division of Duarte-based City of Hope.
