The New York Times reported Monday that Crystal Cruises in Century City has announced plans to convert the SS United States, a historic ocean liner from the Cold War era, into a cruise ship called the United States by Crystal Cruises.
Once renovated, the 800-passenger vessel will feature modern amenities including a spa and entertainment venues. However, certain historic elements will be preserved.
The cruise line is planning a feasibility study by year end that covers the ship’s conversion. It has not yet determined where the ship will travel, but is considering trans-Atlantic sailings from New York City.
