Blue Shield of California, one of the state’s biggest health plans, announced it would eliminate up to 460 jobs, with more than 70 coming from Southern California.

The San Francisco Business Times on Monday reported that the cuts stem from Blue Shield’s need to adjust its workforce to keep its affordability in line as well as cut administrative costs to ensure that Blue Shield had the “right talent, skills and capability to deliver on our strategy.

Of 408 jobs being cut outright, 256 were eliminated and 152 are, “being refilled to best implement our strategy,” according to a Blue Shield statement also released Monday. After the changes, Blue Shield will have roughly 5,400 employees statewide.

According to a series of postings on the state’s Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification WARN website, notice of the layoffs was posted earlier this month and are slated to take effect March 28.
