Real estate developer Leonard Hill has donated $1.9 million to create The Leonard Hill Arts Plaza, a legacy project that will map out a public space under the Sixth Street Viaduct replacement.

The Los Angeles Downtown News reported Wednesday that Hill, a partner at Linear City Development in Downtown Los Angeles, conceived the plaza as a passageway running under the rail lines just west of the Los Angeles River and Santa Fe Avenue. Preliminary plans call for the 1.4-acre parcel to have a stage for performances and open space to hold arts and culturally focused classes.

The design and construction of the plaza, as well as programming for three years, will be defrayed through Hill’s donation, made to the Mayor’s Fund for Los Angeles.

The plaza will be built by the Bureau of Engineering, which is also handling the $449 million replacement of the bridge that for 84 years connected the downtown area to Boyle Heights. The replacement bridge is scheduled to open in 2019.

Hill’s other recent high profile downtown developments include the Toy Factory and Biscuit Company Lofts, as well as a producer credit for “Dorfman in Love,” a 2013 romantic comedy set and filmed almost entirely in the Arts District.
