Groundbreaking is scheduled Wednesday for a $137 million Wilmington rail yard designed to add train capacity and reduce truck traffic.

The Berth 200 rail yard and roadway project, scheduled for completion in 2014, will connect the port’s rail system to the Alameda Corridor. It will reduce traffic on the 710 and 110 freeways by an estimated 2,300 truck trips a day, the port said.

The groundbreaking was announced Monday. The project replaces an aging rail yard and was designed to enable safer and more efficient movement of cargo. The project also includes a storage and queuing yard to improve operations at nearby container terminals.
