New Members Join Port of Long Beach Harbor Commission
Frank Colonna and Bonnie Lowenthal.

The Long Beach Harbor Commission is getting two new members: former Assemblywoman Bonnie Lowenthal and former City Councilman Frank Colonna.

Lowenthal’s appointment will mark the first time the five-member panel that governs the Port of Long Beach with its $180 billion in annual trade has had four female commissioners.

The Long Beach City Council voted Tuesday to confirm the pair, who were nominated by Mayor Robert Garcia.

Lowenthal, 77, also a former council member who once ran against Garcia for mayor, will replace Rich Dines to serve a six-year commission term. Colonna, 73, will replace Doug Drummond, who is stepping down early from the commission, and will serve out the remainder of Drummond’s four years.

Harbor Commissioners are appointed by the mayor to a maximum of two six-year terms. The Harbor Commission’s first meeting with its new members is set for Aug. 14.
