Passenger traffic at Los Angeles International Airport rose more than 6 percent last month, but the struggling economy took a toll on air cargo activity, according to figures released Wednesday.

Los Angeles World Airports, the municipal agency that operates the facility, said both domestic and international traffic were up by roughly 6.6 percent in July as 6.07 million passengers flew through LAX.

Roughly 4.4 million domestic passengers traveled through the airport, compared with 1.6 million international travelers, LAWA said.

Air cargo traffic continued to decline, down 7 percent in July. Most of the loss came from a decrease in freight activity, with mail cargo down less than 1 percent.

Year to date, LAX traffic was up 5.6 percent compared with first seven months of 2010, with domestic traffic rising 6 percent and international traffic up 4 percent. Air cargo activity so far this year was down 4 percent.
