Spirit Airlines sparked a fare war Tuesday as it announced it would enter the crowded Los Angeles-Las Vegas market on May 5.
Spirit plans to fly five daily round-trip flights between the cities, but — in doing so — it will compete head-to-head on that route against the nation’s five biggest airlines. American, Delta, United, US Airways and Southwest all fly between Los Angeles. Adding to the competitive mix, Virgin America also flies that route while JetBlue and Las Vegas-based leisure carrier Allegiant each fly from Las Vegas to nearby Long Beach.
To help make a splash on the competitive route, Spirit is offering heavily restricted $1-each-way fares on the route for flights between May 10 and June 15. The new route comes as Spirit appears to be rebuild its presence in Las Vegas after contracting its operations there between 2007 and 2009.
