The NAACP has scheduled its 2011 national conference in Los Angeles, city officials announced Thursday.

The conference of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, July 23-28 at the Los Angeles Convention Center, is expected to fill about 13,000 hotel rooms and generate more than $11 million in economic impact citywide.

“Having such a distinguished and high-profile organization convene in our city for their 102nd anniversary speaks volumes to Los Angeles’ status as a premier convention city,” Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said in a statement.

The deal to host the conference in Los Angeles was sealed at the NAACP’s 2010 annual conference earlier this month in Kansas City. Los Angeles City Council President Eric Garcetti attended that meeting and made the initial announcement at that time about Los Angeles hosting the 2011 convention

The NAACP was founded in 1909. It has held its annual convention five times in Los Angeles, the last time in 1990.

“The NAACP is excited to bring our 102nd Convention to the City of Angels,” said NAACP chief executive Ben Jealous. “Los Angeles is a cutting edge city, and what happens in LA sets the tone for the country. We can think of no better city to host our convention.”
