Los Angeles International Airport had strong passenger growth during the first half of the year, according to numbers released Tuesday by the city agency that runs LAX.
Ontario International Airport, hit hard by declining passenger numbers over recent years, had less growth but also increased traffic through June, according to the Los Angeles World Airport numbers. Lawa also runs Ontario.
More than 34.3 million passengers used LAX over the first six months of the year, a 7 percent increase above the same period last year. Cargo volume of nearly 952,000 tons is roughly the same as the comparable period in 2013.
For June, LAX’s overall passenger count rose about 7 percent year over year to 6.5 million travelers. The number of domestic passengers increased 6 percent to 4.8 million people. The number of international fliers increased 9 percent to 1.8 million people.
June’s volume of air cargo moving through LAX increased 1 percent year-over-year to nearly 167,000 tons.
For the first six months of 2014, passenger traffic at ONT is up 2 percent to about 2 million people. For the first six months of 2014, ONT’s cargo volumes are up 2 percent to about 225,000 tons.
At Ontario, June’s passenger count increased 6 percent year-over-year to about 362,000 travelers. Domestic travel increased by 5 percent to more than 354,000 people. The number of international travelers increased 103 percent to nearly 8,000 people.
Air cargo traffic at Ontario for the month of June fell about 1 percent to 36,000 tons.
