AMR Corp. on Wednesday said that it is significantly expanding its American Airlines and commuter services at Los Angeles International Airport.

The Fort Worth company said that in April it will add nine West and Midwest destinations from LAX – including Houston, Phoenix and Salt Lake City – and begin daily service to Shanghai. The increase will require $20 million in facility upgrades to add four gates at the American Eagle commuter terminal, which opened just last year.

The service expansion brings to 153 the number of American and American Eagle daily departures from LAX. The company estimates the additional flights will add about $600 million annually to the local economy.

“Today’s announcement demonstrates our commitment to superior service and travel choices for our customers to and from Los Angeles,” said Virasb Vahidi, American’s chief commercial officer, in a statement. “Los Angeles has long been an important market for American and American Eagle.”
