Southwest Airlines on Tuesday kicked off the $508 million redevelopment of Terminal 1 at Los Angeles International Airport, a modernization project expected to bring in 1,500 construction jobs, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti said at a groundbreaking ceremony.

The remodel of the aging terminal, built in the early 1980s, includes a new 12-lane security screening checkpoint, a fully automated checked-baggage inspection and sorting system, refurbished baggage claim area and new seating areas at gates. Street access to the terminal, home to some of the worst traffic congestion at the airport, will be reconfigured.

Australian developer Westfield Corp., which has shopping centers in Century City and Culver City, will bring in 24 new stores and restaurants across 25,242 square feet, nearly double the existing amount of retail and restaurant space.

Construction is expected to be completed in 2018.
