Neetzan Zimmerman is no longer with Whisper, the company confirmed to the Business Journal on Wednesday.
The now former editor-in-chief gained social media notoriety in October after launching a Twitter tirade against the Guardian, which reported the app that lets users anonymously post confessional memes was tracking user information including the locations of where posts were published. Zimmerman said the story was a “pack of vicious lies” and that the U.K. outlet would soon “regret” it. He, along with other staffers, was suspended soon after.
BuzzFeed, Huffington Post and cable channel Fusion dropped their Whisper collaborations following the report. The incident also prompted the U.S. Senate to request a briefing on Whisper’s privacy practices.
“We conducted an internal review that found no wrongdoing. Nevertheless, Neetzan is no longer with the company,” said Whisper Chief Executive Michael Heyward in a statement. “We wish him well in the future and can’t wait to see what he does next.”
Zimmerman, who stayed off Twitter during his suspension, has once again taken to the social media platform to break news. His Twitter bio confirms he is now “formerly EIC” of Whisper. He had previously worked as an editor at Gawker.
