L.A. startups Whim and Rain are two of 28 companies that have been chosen to join Silicon Valley accelerator 500 Startups.
Members of the 10th batch will relocate to San Francisco for the four-month program, during which they will receive mentorships and a net investment of $75,000.
Rain, a Westwood mobile advertising app, helps local businesses create ads and on-the-spot promotions for nearby consumers.
Dating app Whim connects users for same-day dates. The Culver City company launched its website in June and plans to release its mobile app in September during the accelerator program.
“Silicon Valley is still the mecca, so to be invited up there is a huge deal and honor,” said Katey Nilan, Whim’s chief marketing officer.
Other selected companies in the greater Los Angeles area include Woodland Hills’ Givesurance, which donates a portion of insurance payments to charity, and Santa Barbara’s Study Soup, an online marketplace for college students to sell their notes.
