Ride-hailing application developer Uber Technologies Inc. has closed a customer support office downtown and laid off roughly 80 employees.
Uber plans to move the jobs to an existing customer support facility in Manila, according to The Los Angeles Times, which first reported the news.
Uber did not immediately respond to requests for comment, but manager Ruffin Chevaleau told the Times, “We have decided to close the downtown L.A. office and we will be moving the outreach and innovation work to our Manila (center), where we can continue to support the business as it grows,” she said.
Uber has undergone several rounds of layoffs since it went public in May 2019 with a market cap of $69.7 billion. It is not yet profitable but said it plans to be profitable before EBITDA in the next year.
The company has not yet filed a notice for the layoffs with the California Economic Development Department. EDD Public Information Officer Barry White said Uber’s last filing with the Department was in September 2019, when it laid off 238 employees at its San Francisco headquarters and an additional 62 employees at its Palo Alto outpost across various divisions.
In July 2019 Uber also laid off more than 400 employees in its marketing team, nearly 2% of its global workforce.
Uber reported a net loss of $889 million on revenue of $4.1 billion in its 2019 fourth-quarter earnings, which were released Feb. 6. In an earnings statement, Uber Chief Financial Officer Nelson Chai noted, “Our focus on disciplined capital allocation is part and parcel to achieving our financial goals.”
