Snapchat Increases Photo Lifespan With Stories

Snapchat’s disappearing photos and videos have become a hit, so now the Venice company has added a feature with a little more permanence.

The company announced today that it has launched Snapchat Stories as a 24-hour news feed of sorts for a person’s Snapchat followers.

To use Stories, Snapchat users must take a photo or video using the app. Then instead of sending the photo to a friend, they can add it to their Story. That photo is then broadcast to Snapchat friends or the public for 24 hours. More photos and videos can be added to the Stories throughout the day.

This is the first time that Snapchat has allowed content to live in its app longer than 10 seconds.

The startup announced the feature by sending a video message to users.

“Snapchat Stories add Snaps together to create a narrative,” the company also wrote on its blog. “When you add a Snap to your Story it lives for 24 hours before it disappears, making room for the new. Your Story always plays forward, because it makes sense to share moments in the order you experience them.”

Stories appears to be Snapchat’s answer to the Facebook and Twitter timelines, which allow people to view content that friends have posted most recently. It also increases the lifespan for some of Snapchat’s photos and videos, which could prove important if the company looks to monetize through in-app advertising or branded content.
