Inside the LA Times Malware Attack

The cyberattack which delayed production at various newspapers including the LA Times was orchestrated by a malware program called Ryuk. Publishing operations were halted Dec. 29 as the malware made its way through every computer on the papers’ networks, encrypting files and demanding ransom in Bitcoin to regain access. By Dec. 31, the hack was resolved, the Times reports.

Cloud Constellation Corp. Raises $100 Million

Westwood-based data storage outfit Cloud Constellation Corp. raised $100 million for its SpaceBelt satellite network, the Business Journal reports. Led by HCH Group Company Ltd., the financing round boosts Cloud Constellation’s efforts to create a non-terrestrial secure storage network.

AT&T Inc. Releases Earthquake Warning App

ShakeAlertLA, the earthquake early warning application developed by AT&T Inc., was released to the public for download Jan. 2. Created with the U.S. Geological Survey, the app sends an alert up to a minute before the quake occurs alerting locals nearby and instructing them on how to protect themselves. ShakeAlertLA is currently free on Apple and Android smartphones.
