Proctor & Gamble Co. is suing upstart rival Dollar Shave Club for alleged patent infringement, reports Recode.
The civil suit asks the U.S. District Court of Delaware to stop Dollar Shave Club, based in Venice, from selling razors that infringe one of Gillette’s patents.
Dollar Shave Club is an online razor subscription service that has grown rapidly since its founding in 2012, thanks in large part to a funny commercial featuring founder and Chief Executive Michael Dubin that went viral on the Internet.
The company’s subscription plans range from $1 to $9 a month. It claims to have more than 2.4 million subscribers as of last month. Subscribers get razors delivered regularly to their door through the mail.
Proctor & Gamble’s higher-priced razors, such as Gillette, haven’t sold as well in recent years, in part due to lower price competition from online razor sellers.
