Santa Monica’s ParkMe, which provides real-time parking information through its app, has expanded its service to Venice and Hollywood.

The six-year-old company had been providing information about parking lots and open metered spots in Santa Monica since 2012. Its service is now available in 3,100 cities worldwide and can be accessed via a smartphone app, on the company’s Website and within GPS navigation devices, according to a statement.

Approximately 800 smart meters in Venice and 900 in Hollywood have now been connected to ParkMe’s database.

The expansion is part of the Los Angeles Department of Transportation’s L.A. Express Park program, which is designed to increase the availability of public parking spaces and decrease traffic congestion and pollution. The program’s smart meters and parking sensors had previously only been available in Downtown Los Angeles.

According to a ParkMe spokeswoman, the city hired Xerox Corp. as its main contractor on the Express Park program. Xerox in turn contracted ParkMe to distribute live meter parking rates and availability culled from sensors and smart meters.

“From sensor-based infrastructures to proprietary algorithmic models, we are looking forward to a deeper expansion that will bring intelligent parking solutions to an even wider audience throughout the nation,” said ParkMe co-founder and chief operating officer, Alex Israel, in a statement.

ParkMe has received more than $7 million in funding from firms such as Fontinalis Partners, IDG Ventures and Angeleno Group.
