Moviepilot, an online film review and publishing site, will undertake an accelerated hiring schedule as it squarely focuses on its U.S. operations in Venice.
The company said it would be adding 25 to 35 positions over the next year to build out its L.A. team to about 50 people. Aaron Kelly, director of content and community, said Moviepilot was primarily looking for “social media mavericks” with backgrounds in writing, video editing and shooting, search engine optimization, public relations and marketing. The film site also maintains a 45-person team in Berlin to handle its international operations.
Moviepilot sold its German flagship, moviepilot.de, to French online publishing company Webedia for $20 million in June. Kelly said the proceeds would be reinvested into Moviepilot.com, which cleared 50 million visits this month, as well as pay returns to the site’s longtime backers. The site raised a $7 million in a 2012 Series B round led by DFJ Esprit and with support from T-Venture, Grazia Equity and VC Fund Creative Industries Berlin.
“We’re focusing on building an L.A.-centric company because there’s a wonderful content maker culture here,” Kelly said. “It’s also fun not to be in the tech bubble that is San Francisco or sometimes even New York. The L.A. tech community has been really kind to us.”
