Steve Reneker, chief technology officer and general manager of L.A.’s Information Technology Agency said he would resign May 1, leaving to take a similar job in Riverside County, where he lives.

Mayor Eric Garcetti announced Chief Innovation Officer Peter Marx will replace Reneker.

Marx, who assumed the CIO role 13 months ago, is spearheading special technology projects such as a city services request app, opening the city’s data to the public and a new Bluetooth-enabled parking sign experiment.

He said he would focus on getting technologies run by different city departments to communicate. He also wants city data and services to be more accessible to residents and businesses.

“Part of this role is actually getting people to work together,” said Marx.

To accomplish that, Marx will not also take on the ITA general manager role his predecessor held, will be less involved in the implementation of special projects and more focused on managing interdepartmental relationships.

“The strategy is now going to come a little more to the forefront,” he said. “I want to make the city as user friendly as possible.”
