Lions Gate Entertainment Inc. has signed a deal to distribute its movie library on video game platform Steam.
The partnership, which launched yesterday, brings more than 100 films in Lions Gate’s library to Steam, including the “Hunger Games,” “Twilight,” “Saw,” and “Divergent” franchises. The Steam platform, created by Valve Corp. of Bellevue, Wash., has more than 125 million users and is used to play a variety of computer-based games.
The Santa Monica studio is aiming to distribute its library of content as far and wide as possible, said Thomas Hughes, executive vice president of worldwide digital.
“The more points of distribution we have the better,” he said. “We are about customer choice and giving that customer the ability to watch on whatever platform they want.”
Lions Gate picked movies tailored to the platform’s predominately male audience, said Hughes. The most popular movie so far is “Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2,” he said.
