Fulcrum Microsystems, a Calabasas manufacturer of specialized semiconductors used in data center networks, is being acquired by Intel Corp. for an undisclosed amount, the companies said Tuesday.
The Santa Clara semiconductor giant said that Fulcrum’s high-speed and high-capacity chips will complement its own processors and Ethernet controllers as more data is moved by individuals and companies onto so-called “cloud” networks.
“Intel is transforming from a leading server technology company to a comprehensive data center provider that offers computing, storage and networking building blocks,” said Kirk Skaugen, vice president and general manager for Intel’s Data Center Group.
Fulcrum Microsystems has more than $114 million in venture backing from Granite Ventures, Infinity Capital, New Enterprise Associates, Palomar Ventures and others. Pending approval by the private company’s shareholders, the deal is expected to close in the third quarter.
