National Technical Systems Inc. saw a slight increase in fiscal third-quarter profit as the technical services company benefited from new defense contracts and added business from acquisitions.

The Calabasas company reported net income of $1.13 million for the quarter ended Oct. 31, compared with $1.12 million a year earlier. Earnings per share for both quarters were 11 cents, due to the larger number of shares outstanding this year.

Revenue rose 19 percent to more than $39 million. Revenue growth was offset by a 21.8 percent increase in selling, general and administrative expense.

NTS, which provides engineering and compliance testing services to the defense, aerospace, telecommunications, and other industries, said that it is on track this year to nearly double its revenue from continuing operations.

Chief Executive William C. McGinnis said the company’s performance has been boosted by new testing and engineering services contracts with Boeing and Hawker Beechcraft, as well as efficient integration of recent acquisitions. Unitek Technical Services, which was acquired a year ago, contributed more than 9 percent of the increase in the quarter’s revenues.

“Strategically we are on the right track,” McGinnis said.

Shares closed down 2 cents, or less than a percent, to $7.01 on the Nasdaq.
