Garcetti Appoints L.A.’s First Chief Data Officer

Mayor Eric Garcetti has appointed the city’s first chief data officer as part of his initiative to boost Los Angeles with tech-driven policies.

Abhi Nemani, previously co-executive director of the nonprofit Code for America, will work with city officials to collect and analyze data and oversee the day-to-day operations of the new open-data portal, DataLA.

Garcetti, who calls himself L.A.’s “tech” mayor, unveiled the open data site in October. But dismal web traffic – L.A. Weekly reported the site averaged 34 page views a day – led to a much-needed reboot in May. The site offers a range of city data, from employment figures to the total number of miles driven in Los Angeles each day.

Nemani joins Garcetti’s Office of Budget and Innovation in September.
