Support is growing for a proposal to force Uber, Lyft and limousine drivers to get fingerprint-based background checks before they can transport passengers to and from Los Angeles International Airport.

The Los Angeles Airport Peace Officers’ Association, a union representing police officers and firefighters serving the city’s airports, voiced their support Friday for the recommendation put forth by Mayor Eric Garcetti and other officials that rideshare services and limousine firms be held to the same standards as taxi and shuttle companies.

Via a letter sent to the California Public Utilities Commission Thursday, Garcetti, Council President Herb Wesson and Council Member Paul Krekorian recommended mandating fingerprint scans and background checks for drivers working for ride-booking services.

That letter asks state regulators to allow the city to start a pilot program that would ban non-fingerprinted drivers for such services from working within the city limits.

LAAPOA President Marshall McClain said in a statement for passenger safety reasons his unions recommended the implementation of the proposals.

The LAAPOA is part of a coalition of trade groups advocating that ridesharing companies meet a range of specific requirements before being permitted to operate at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), LA/Ontario International Airport (ONT) and Van Nuys Airport (VNY).
