The pioneer of digital invitations is taking its business offline.

West Hollywood’s Evite announced Wednesday that it has started sending physical invitations by mail through a service called Evite Ink.

Party planners can now design invitations online that Evite then prints and mails to guests.

“At Evite, we’re seeing a longing for the joy of sending and receiving a physical invitation through the mail,” President Hans Woolley said in a statement. “With the introduction of Evite Ink, we are marrying the ease and utility of Evite’s traditional online service with the ability to mail out physical invitations to guests, so our community can have the best of both worlds.”

Evite charges $2 plus postage and tax for every 4-by-6 card and accompanying envelope.

The system allows party planners to send some invites via snail mail and other invites via email. Each physical invite will come with a code to RSVP online. That means hosts can keep track of their guest list through Evite’s system regardless of whether they sent digital or physical invites.

Evite started in 1998 as one of the first tools for sending invitations online. Today the company is a subsidiary of Liberty Interactive Corp. in Englewood, Colo., and claims more than 32 million registered users.

But the company has seen significant competition from up and comers such as Paperless Post and even Facebook’s event feature.

Last year the company added its first ad-free service, Evite Postmark. Woolley told the Business Journal at the time that Postmark, which costs up to 30 cents per person, was designed to mimic an offline experience.

“For those events that you want to be casual, Evite is great,” he said. “If you want something without ads, Postmark may be the right fit.”
