Epson’s Smart Glasses Added to Salesforce Wear

Epson, the producer of printers and projectors with U.S. headquarters in Long Beach, is seeing a different kind of tech take off with its smart glasses.

The Android-based Epson Moverio is one of five wearable devices that are now connected with Salesforce Wear, a cloud platform used by software developers to create apps for smart gear. Other newly compatible wearables include wristband Jawbone UP, virtual reality headset Oculus Rift and two more smart glasses from Meta and Vuzix.

Salesforce.com, a cloud computing company headquartered in San Francisco, launched the platform in June to help app developers connect with wearable device makers and build mobile apps for wearables like Google Glass or the Samsung Gear II smartwatch.

“The explosive growth of Salesforce Wear has validated the need for a unified platform to bring together software companies, wearable device manufacturers and developers wanting to create apps that will enable companies to connect with customers in entirely new ways,” said Daniel Debow, Salesforce’s senior vice president of emerging technologies, in a statement.

Wearable devices are the latest tech bets that have investors and companies scrambling to get ahead. Facebook purchased Irvine virtual reality startup Oculus VR for $2 billion earlier this year. Samsung unveiled its smartphone-powered Gear VR headset Wednesday. And Apple is expected to present its wearable iWatch at its keynote presentation on Sept. 9.
