The Digital Cinema Distribution Coalition, which operates a satellite distribution system for film distributors and exhibitors, said its network of theaters topped 2,000 by the end of 2015 – an increase of 40 percent for the calendar year.
Century City’s DCDC launched in 2013 as a means to more cheaply distribute cinema-quality video using satellite downloads in favor of shipping film reels or hard drives. Its members include AMC Theatres, Regal Entertainment Group, Cinemark Theatres, Universal Pictures, and Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc.
DCDC said it had made nearly 400,000 deliveries of features and other content, including live and pre-recorded events, to theaters.
Satellite uplinks allow theaters to show live events, such as sporting matches, which allows theaters to supplement their core feature film business. DCDC network theaters showed 38 live events last year.
