International Rectifier Corp. swung to a profit in its fiscal second quarter profit, helped in part by tax benefits. The semiconductor maker also forecast third-quarter revenue above analyst expectations.

After the Tuesday markets closed, the Los Angeles maker of power management devices earned $28.3 million (39 cents a share) for the quarter ended Dec. 27, compared with a loss of nearly $190 million (-$2.61) a year ago. Revenue rose 11 percent to $210 million, and the company had a tax benefit of $27.8 million.

Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters on average expected a loss of 8 cents a share on revenue of $196.6 million.

The company expects third-quarter revenue of between $225 million and $235 million. The analyst average forecast is $204 million.

“Increased focus on energy efficiency continues to drive demand for power management semiconductors,” said Chief Executive Officer Oleg Khaykin in a press release.” Our revitalized product portfolio … has led to increased orders in key end market segments such as servers, appliances, notebooks and high definition televisions.”

Shares earlier closed up 69 cents, or 3.6 percent, to close at $19.92 on the New York Stock Exchange.
