Kalanick rose to fame – and then infamy – when he founded ridesharing platform Uber. Though Kalanick stepped down as chief executive in 2017 amid a storm of sexual harassment and hostile workplace complaints, he remained on the board until 2019. Ever since, he has quietly been working behind the scenes on his food-related venture, Cloud Kitchens. In 2021, Cloud Kitchen’s parent company, City Storage Systems (which Kalanick is the chief executive of) raised $850 million for a $15 billion valuation. City Storage Systems has a handful of companies under it. One of them is Otter, which allows restaurants to use multiple food delivery apps at once and, according to Insider, makes $80 million in annual recurring revenue. Kalanick has also been lobbying lawmakers in California to require food delivery apps to share customer data with restaurants.

Education: Kalanick dropped out of the University of California, Los Angeles in 1998 to commit to his first startup, a search engine called Scour Inc. He was studying computer engineering.

Real Estate: In 2020, he bought a home in Los Angeles for $43 million.
