It has been a long time since Berggruen could claim the title of the homeless billionaire. The philanthropist and art collector began buying up properties in 2012 after spending years hotel hopping. Besides his Holmby Hills estate, Berggruen owns a handful of apartments in the star-studded West Hollywood-based Sierra Towers and a Beverly Hills estate once owned by William Randall Hearst. In 2023 he purchased three properties in Venice, Italy, with the goal of hosting galas, dinners and events. A 450-acre campus for philosophers and thinkers at the Berggruen Institute is under development in the Santa Monica mountains.
Education: Berggruen attended New York University and studied finance and business.
Charitable Giving: The Berggruen Charitable Foundation has around $11 million in assets.
Real Estate: Berggruen’s Holmby Hills estate combines a $41 million property and another 2.2-acre swathe of land that he bought for $22.5 million. His Beverly Hills home was bought in 2021 for $63 million. He subsequently bought two neighboring plots of land for $27.1 million.
