Skoll finally parted ways with Hollywood in 2024 when he shuttered Participant Media in April, after quietly trying to sell the company for almost a year. Skoll made the bulk of his wealth in Silicon Valley at auction site eBay Inc. during the late 1990s. He left eBay and cashed out nearly $2 billion. He came to Hollywood in 2004 and founded Participant, which produced socially conscious content such as “Good Night, and Good Luck,” “Green Book” and “An Inconvenient Truth.” Since closing earlier this year, the production company has laid off most of its 100 staffers.
