THE MONEY: Edythe Broad – whose fortune largely came by way of late husband Eli Broad’s two Fortune 500 companies, KB Home and SunAmerica – remains one of L.A.’s preeminent philanthropists. Prior to Eli’s death in 2021, the pair had spent more than two decades involved in L.A.-area philanthropy, and it’s a legacy she has carried on. Between the Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation and the Broad Art Foundation, more than $4 billion has been doled out for causes related to education, science, the arts and their adopted hometown of Los Angeles. The Broad museum, which opened in downtown Los Angeles in 2015, exhibits much of the Broads’ personal art collection, which is reportedly valued at more than $2 billion.

THE BUZZ: Broad has in recent years made donations in support of education. Through 2026, the Broad Foundation is disbursing $5 million to ExpandLA, a nonprofit that provides afterschool activities geared to boost mental health and educational advancement throughout the county. Last year, the foundation donated $2 million to Howard University to support students from Los Angeles County enrolled in STEM programs at the historically Black college. The Broad museum since May has hosted a special exhibition of artist Keith Haring’s body of work. A signee to The Giving Pledge, Broad has committed to giving away 75% of her wealth. In addition to supporting its flagship initiatives in education, science and the arts, The Broad Foundation actively invests in three areas of its grantmaking: Skills for a New Economy, Pathways to Good Jobs, and Civic Partnerships.
