THE MONEY: Karsh represents the private half of Oak Tree Capital Group’s founding group, with his longtime business Howard Marks acting as the public face of the firm. For almost 30 years, Karsh has helmed the private equity firm’s distressed-debt portfolio as the co-chair and chief investment officer, growing its assets under management to $170 billion as of June. While Brookfield Asset Management acquired more than 61% of the company in 2019, Karsh still retains a significant ownership stake in Oaktree.
THE BUZZ: After an on-and-off relationship with the real estate market, the billionaire finally unloaded his historic Beverly Crest mansion for $38 million in March – a sharp discount from its initial $60 million listing in 2020. Karsh will remain in the area with a little help from his business partner Marks, who sold Karsh a $29.5 Holmby Hills mansion located down the street from the Playboy Mansion in February. Beyond moving spots in the hills, Karsh and his wife, Martha, continued their philanthropic pursuits this year.
