THE MONEY: Bobby Murphy co-founded Snap Inc. in 2011 as a student at Stanford University and currently serves as chief technology officer at the company. Snap, which owns influential social media app Snapchat, went public in 2017, making Murphy a billionaire overnight. He owns nearly half of all voting shares in Snap, as well as about 70 million shares of common stock. Murphy has sold just over $46 million of Snap stock since last fall. Snap’s stock peaked an an all-time high in the fall of 2021 before hitting a nearly four-year low last October, which resulted in Murphy’s fortune falling by about 70%. The company’s value has since stabilized.
THE BUZZ: While Snap reported its second consecutive decline in quarterly sales in July, it announced that Snapchat+, a paid addition to its signature app that launched last April, has accumulated more than 4 million subscribers. Murphy owns a collection of Southern California real estate, including a beachfront home on the Strand in Manhattan Beach and the former Pacific Palisades estate of “Green Acres” star Eddie Albert.
