THE MONEY: Much of Nathanson’s wealth comes from the 1999 sale of Falcon Communications. Nathanson sold the company to Charter Communications for $3.7 billion. Nathanson then went on to found Mapleton Investments. Mapleton Properties, its investment arm, has a portfolio valued at roughly $571 million. The company, run by son Adam Nathanson, owns assets in the Western United States. This year, Nathanson’s real estate holdings rose 5%, his art collection surged 8% in value, and his direct and private equity investments were up 15%. His equity investments, however, were down 15%.
THE BUZZ: Nathanson currently serves as the U.S. ambassador to Norway. He was on the national finance committee for President Joe Biden. In 2019, Nathanson joined the board of Trine Acquisition Corp., a blank-check company. He founded the Nathanson Family Resilience Center at UCLA Medical and is the vice chairman at the National Democratic Institute for International Affairs. His wife, Jane Nathanson, is a trustee for the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Their endowment at UCLA resulted in the Jane and Marc Nathanson Family Professor in Psychiatry chair.
