Meruelo is involved in a long-term project to revive his Arizona Coyotes NHL franchise and build real estate and related side businesses. The Downey-based Meruelo Group is pushing a $2 billion-plus real estate development in Tempe, Arizona, that faces opposition from local residents in part because Meruelo seeks large tax breaks. The project encompasses a 16,000-seat hockey arena, 2,000 apartments and an entertainment district. Meruelo is a self-made businessman and often described as a billionaire; he gained control of the Coyotes in 2019. His other interests include radio and TV, real estate, engineering, hospitality, gaming and turnarounds of struggling businesses.
