LA500 2023: Nicolas Berggruen

Founder & Chairman, Berggruen Institute

Berggruen founded the institute in 2010 as a think tank to explore
global political and cultural issues such as climate change and the
economy. The annual Berggruen Prize for Philosophy and Culture is a
signature event. In December, the $1 million prize went to the Japanese
philosopher and literary critic Kojin Karatani for his “radically original
contributions to modern philosophy, the history of philosophy, and political
thinking.” Berggruen has served on a number of boards, including
the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Museum Berggruen
in Berlin. Berggruen is investment advisor to Berggruen Holdings, the
investment vehicle of Nicolas Berggruen Charitable Trust.
