Chief Executive, Sundance Institute
Joana Vicente began leading the Sundance Institute in 2021. It is a
nonprofit founded in 1981 by Robert Redford to foster independent
storytelling, especially in film. Known for its eponymous film festival,
the institute on the Miracle Mile has a staff of more than 180 who offer
16 labs, grants exceeding $3 million and mentorships that support
more than 900 artists each year. Prior to joining Sundance, Vicente
was executive director and co-head of the Toronto International Film
Festival for three years, and for nearly a decade before that she was
executive director of what is now the Gotham Film & Media Institute
in New York. She also has produced or executive produced more than
40 feature films.
